A Coup d’etat? That’s Crazy!

For three years now we have been bombarded by what has been termed an “Alternative Reality.”  This so-called reality (alternative facts) was defined clearly by Donald Trump several months ago:  “Stick with us.  Don’t believe the crap you see from these people, the fake news. …What you’re seeing and what you’re reading is not what’s happening.” In other words, the source of truth comes from “us”—“Stick with us.”  I was surprised then and I am totally stunned now that so many Americans are willing to accept, without serious thought, that mantra.  

Just a few weeks ago, Mr. Trump, in an interview with Sean Hannity of Fox News said, “This was a coup (referring to Special Counsel Mueller’s investigation concerning the influence by Russia in the 2016 election).  This was an attempted overthrow of the United States government…I think it’s far bigger than Watergate.  I think it’s possibly the biggest scandal in political history in this country.  Maybe beyond political. …This was a coup.  This wasn’t stealing information from an office in the Watergate apartments.  This was an attempted coup.”

Trump and his allies, Fox News and Friends, Jerry Falwell, Jr., and others, are now bandying this alternative fact—this alternative reality of an attempted coup. Falwell, just yesterday tweeted:  “After the best week ever for @realDonaldTrump - no obstruction, no collusion, NYT admits @BarackObama did spy on his campaign, & the economy is soaring. I now support reparations-Trump should have 2 yrs added to his 1st term as pay back for time stolen by this corrupt failed coup.” 

“If you tell a big enough lie and tell it frequently enough, it will be believed,” according to Adolf Hitler.   A coup d’etat is “the sudden and irregular (i.e. illegal or extra-legal) removal, or displacement, of the executive authority of an independent government.”  The Mueller investigation was undertaken by law enforcement and adhered to the relevant laws—it was not carried out beyond the bonds of legality.  That’s a fact.  There has been no attempted coup on the Office of the President of the United States or the government of the United States.  It’s a lie!  It’s a stunt!  It’s stupid!  It doesn’t fit the facts!  

But don’t be concerned about the lie, the stunt, or the stupidity, because “What you’re seeing and what you’re reading,” HERE, OR FROM ANY OTHER SOURCE, BUT US, “is not what’s  happening.”
